About São Paulo
A city of many food traditions
São Paulo brings together museums, cultural spaces, parks and a wide range of regional and international cooking. Food offers one way into that larger city: through neighbourhood restaurants, markets, street food and recipes shared between generations.
The municipal Gastronomy Observatory describes a food culture shaped by Indigenous knowledge, migration from other parts of Brazil and communities with roots around the world. Italian, Japanese, Korean, Bolivian and African influences are among the many strands it identifies. Pizza belongs within this broader story of people making a city their home.
Pizza as part of city life
Pizza has a longstanding place in São Paulo’s public food culture. A municipal article published on 10 July 2007 documented the city’s Pizza Day celebrations. That historical account offers context for an enduring local enthusiasm; its restaurant counts are not a measure of the city today.
Our São Paulo coverage will grow through individual pizzerias and the people behind them. Compare each establishment’s own menu, address and traditions as those profiles become available, rather than assuming that every São Paulo pizza follows one recipe or oven tradition.
Beyond the pizza table
Art at MASP and the Pinacoteca, the cultural spaces of Ibirapuera Park, neighbourhood markets and the Municipal Market offer further ways to explore the city. Liberdade carries both Japanese immigration heritage and Afro-Brazilian memory. These places help put a meal in the context of the city around it.
